Mahei (麻黑) Village is legendary for its tea. It is considered “Yiwu Zhengshan” (易武正山), meaning that it is from what is considered the core mountain area of Yiwu. Located in the northeast of Yiwu Township, this mountainous area spans 2.74 square kilometers and has an altitude of 1,203 meters. Mahei is home to 123 households of farmers and the primary source of income for the farmers in the area is tea.
Mahei is one of the villages with the longest history in the Yiwu area. The population is primarily Han ethnicity who came to the area from Shiping (石屏) and Jiangxi (江西) to make and sell tea. Mahei is known for its excellent hand-made tea craftsmanship that has been passed down from generation to generation. The remote environment is pristine and untouched by pollution, so it is an excellent place for tea trees, and the people are known for living in harmony with nature. Some say that Mahei tea can be regarded as the benchmark for Yiwu tea. Mahei tea is known for its orchid aroma (兰香) and caramel aroma (焦糖香).
